My child turns 4 this summer. Is that preschool or junior kindergarten?"
We hear this question every single week.
And we get it. The names sound similar. The ages overlap. And every child grows at their own pace.
So here is a simple guide to help you figure out which program at New Discoveries Early Learning Center is the right fit for your child.

Quick Snapshot
Program | Ages | Best for |
Preschool | 2.5-3 | First classroom experience. Learning to love learning. |
Junior Kindergarten | 4-5 | Ready for more structure. Building kindergarten readiness. |
Young 5's | 5 | Needs one more year to grow before kindergarten. |
Preschool (Age 2.5-3)
This is where most kids start.
The goal is simple. We want your child to love learning.
In Preschool, kids build early skills like:
Recognizing letters, numbers, colors, and shapes
Sharing, taking turns, and making friends
Following simple routines
Using scissors, crayons, glue, and paint
Faith is part of every day. Bible stories. Prayer time. Songs about God's love. Your child learns who Jesus is in a warm, hands-on way.
It is their first taste of school. And we want it to feel like a really good one.
Junior Kindergarten (Ages 4-5)
This is the bridge year.
Your child already knows the basics. Now it is time to stretch.
In JK, we dig deeper:
Writing their name and simple words
Counting, patterns, and early math
Listening to longer stories and answering questions about them
Working in small groups and solving problems together
We also build character. Kindness. Honesty. Responsibility. These are daily lessons, not just subjects.
By the end of JK, most kids walk into kindergarten confident and ready.
Young 5's (Age 5)
Not every 5-year-old is ready for kindergarten. And that is completely okay.
Young 5's gives your child one more year to grow before the big jump. We focus on:
Confidence and independence
Reading readiness and early writing
Staying focused for longer stretches
Social skills for a bigger classroom
Kids who do Young 5's often walk into kindergarten the next year as leaders, not followers. An extra year of growth changes everything.
How Do I Know Which Program Fits?
Start with age. Then think about your child.
Ask yourself:
How does my child handle a new setting without me?
Can they follow a two-step direction?
Do they light up around other kids, or do they hang back?
How is their focus for 10-15 minutes at a time?
There is no wrong answer. Every child is different. Some kids thrive in a structured JK classroom at age 4. Others need another year of play-based preschool first.
Still unsure? Come tour the school.
Mandi, our director, will sit down with you. She will ask about your child. She will show you the classrooms. And she will help you land on the right fit.
