The “Gift of Time”: Is a Young 5’s Program Right for Your Child?

If you have a child with a late spring, summer, or fall birthday, you’ve probably spent a few sleepless nights staring at the school calendar. You’re asking the big question: “Are they ready for the rigors of Kindergarten, or do they need one more year to just... be a kid?”

At New Discoveries Early Learning Center, we hear this from parents every single year. The jump from preschool to a formal K-12 environment is bigger than it used to be. That’s where our Young 5’s Program comes in.

What is a Young 5’s Program? (The “Bridge Year”)

Think of Young 5’s as the ultimate "bridge." It isn't just another year of preschool, and it isn't quite the high-pressure environment of a traditional Kindergarten.

In 2026, the academic expectations for five-year-olds are higher than ever. Our Young 5’s curriculum at New Discoveries is designed specifically for children who are age-eligible for Kindergarten but would benefit from an extra year of social, emotional, and physical development.

Why "The Gift of Time" Matters in 2026

In a world that wants kids to grow up fast, we believe there is power in slowing down. Here is why parents choose our Young 5’s transition:

  • Building "Social Stamina": Kindergarten requires sitting still, following multi-step directions, and navigating complex playground dynamics. Young 5’s lets kids practice these skills in a smaller, more supportive setting.

  • Confidence Over Competition: Instead of being the youngest (and perhaps most overwhelmed) in a Kindergarten class, your child gets to be a leader in Young 5’s. This "big kid" confidence sticks with them all the way through middle school.

  • Fine Motor Mastery: Writing isn't just about letters; it’s about hand strength. We use sensory play and art to ensure that when they do start K-12, their hands are ready for the pencil.

Is Your Child a Candidate for Young 5’s?

At New Discoveries Early Learning Center, we usually recommend this program if your child:

  1. Has a "Late" Birthday: They turn five close to the district cut-off date.

  2. Needs an "Emotional Growth Spurt": They are academically bright but struggle with big transitions or separation.

  3. Needs More "Doing" and Less "Sitting": They learn best through movement and tactile experiences rather than worksheets.
