Potty Training and Preschool: What Parents Should Know

Oct 23
1 min read

Does my child have to be potty trained for preschool? At New Discoveries, yes. Children must be fully potty trained to enroll.

Why? We are a preschool, not a daycare. Our teachers spend the morning teaching, reading, and guiding small groups. A child who can handle the bathroom alone can take part in every part of the day.

What Fully Potty Trained Means to Us

Your child uses the toilet and does not need diapers or pull-ups during the school day. Accidents still happen to little kids sometimes. That is normal. Every child keeps a change of clothes in their backpack, just in case.

Ways to Get Ready at Home

  • Dress your child in easy clothes with elastic waists.

  • Practice washing hands without help.

  • Talk about the bathroom at school in a happy, calm way.

  • Pack a full change of clothes in the backpack.

  • Tell the teacher anything that helps, like how your child signals they need to go.

What If We Are Not There Yet?

That is okay. Lots of families wait until the next school year. There is no race. If you are unsure, call us at (316) 650-3719. We will talk through your child's timing with you.
